Great Lakes Water Conservation and Availability
The upper midwestern United States is rich in water resources. The Great Lakes basin holds 95% of the fresh surface water in North America and 18% of the fresh surface water in the world. However increasing human population and increasing use of water have led to lower surface and ground water levels and lower drinking and surface water quality. This initiative will evaluate gaps in knowledge about ground water and surface water interactions in the Great Lakes Region, threats to long-term water availability, related public policy needs, and potential roles for Land Grant universities.
